House Passes Federal Minimum Wage Increase
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill today to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour in three steps over 26 months. Under the bill the minimum wage would increase to $5.85 an hour 60 days after signed into law by the president, to $6.55 and then to $7.25 over two years. It appears that the bill will have a hard time passing the U.S. Senate unless the minimum wage increase is coupled with tax breaks or other types of relief for small businesses. The bill, as it stands now, would not affect California employers' minimum wage obligations -- who are required to pay $7.50 per hour as of January 1, 2007, and this amount increases to $8 per hour effective January 1, 2008.
